This year, America turns 250.
It’s a milestone worth marking, and, if we’re honest, a milestone worth sitting with. Because for as long as this country has existed, cannabis has occupied a strange and painful place in it: sacred to some, criminalized for others, and enforced along lines that were never actually about the plant.
For decades, the War on Drugs fell hardest on Black and Brown communities. Arrest rates, sentencing, and lost opportunity were never distributed evenly-even when usage rates were. Women, especially women of color, carried their own version of this weight: as caregivers navigating a system that punished them for a plant now sold legally down the street, as entrepreneurs shut out of an industry built partly on their communities’ backs, as mothers who lost time, custody, and opportunity over something now stocked on dispensary shelves.
Legal cannabis in New Jersey exists, in part, because people fought to make the industry repair some of what it once destroyed. That’s not a footnote. That’s the whole point of social equity licensing, of reinvestment funds, of the word “equity” being written into the law at all.
We haven’t forgotten that. We won’t.
Lady L was built on that responsibility, not just to sell cannabis, but to stand for something bigger.
We are a woman-owned, independently operated dispensary in Jersey City, and we take that identity seriously. Not as a marketing angle, but as a standard we hold ourselves to. That means:
None of that makes up for 250 years. Nothing could. But it’s the part we can actually do something about-today, in this city, with the people around us.
A milestone is only worth celebrating if it comes with honesty.
So this year, alongside the fireworks and the flags, we’re choosing to also hold the harder truth: that freedom in this country has never been distributed equally, and that cannabis legalization, as much progress as it represents, is not the finish line. It’s a checkpoint.
We believe in a kinder, wiser, softer future. Not as a slogan, but as a direction we’re actively walking toward-one delivery, one event, one relationship, one accountable decision at a time.
Thank you for building that future with us.
With gratitude and resolve,
The Lady L Team
